This Energy Exchange recorded session* details how to best perform water assessments in federal facilities. It shares water-assessment best practices, covers calculation methods needed for Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 studies, and explains how to perform a basic water balance.

Instructors

Eric Elam, VP of Project Development, Water Savers, LLC  

Eric is the main point of contact for water efficiency designs in excess of 50 million square feet annually and handles all facets of the audit, including technical questions, specifications and general project development questions. Eric has extensive experience in water and energy conservation engineering practices. He leads the project development team and is the lead for auditing, measurement and verification, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates. Eric holds a B.S. degree in biological sciences from the University of Missouri.

Varun Sood, Resource Efficiency Manager, U.S. Army Reserve  

In this role, he is responsible for promoting the energy and water conservation programs at 63d Readiness Division for a diverse real estate portfolio including mission critical facilities. His focus includes development of energy and water efficient projects, increasing renewable energy portfolio, and incorporating sustainable design practices in new construction. Prior to joining the U.S. Army Reserve, Varun worked for an energy service company as a project engineer in the Performance Contracting division. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from University of Illinois at Chicago.

Emily Wendel, Senior Research Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory  

Emily specializes in integrating field assessments, analysis, and tool development to support decision making around energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction and resiliency.

  • The process used to ensure marketing systems are cyber secure;
  • How utility systems leverage meters to improve system reliability;
  • Metering requirements for federal data centers; and
