The EV Champion Training is a virtual training series hosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory that is designed to provide fleet managers and coordinators with the skills and knowledge to become subject matter experts in electric vehicle (EV) implementation. This four-part training serves as an introduction to EV technology and considerations for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) installation. This webinar focuses on advanced considerations for EV site assessments, optimally operating a fleet of EVs, and managing workplace charging.

This training is part of a sequential series. The recommended order of completion is:

  • EV Champion Training 1: EV Technology and Financial Considerations;
  • EV Champion Training 2: EVSE Power And Installation Requirements;
  • EV Champion Training 3: EV Site Assessments; and
  • EV Champion Training 4: Advanced Fleet Electrification.

    Jesse Bennett, Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory  

    Jesse Bennett works at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in vehicle technology integration, helping fleets implement electric vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment. He performs site visits, makes implementation recommendations, troubleshoots electric vehicle fleet projects, and develops training sessions for fleets. Prior to joining NREL, Bennett worked as a materials and standards engineer with Duquesne Light Company, where he developed standard construction drawings and material specifications for a broad range of electric distribution equipment such as transformers, switches, and cable. He also received his Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering from Bucknell University.

    Upon completion of this training, attendees will be able to:

    • Select the best EVs for their fleet;
    • Plan for the installation of EVSE that will serve the needs of these new vehicles;
    • Understand how to perform advanced EV site assessments, including considering managed charging solutions, integrating EVSE with facility energy loads, and doing cost-benefit analysis;
    • Optimally operate an EV fleet, including Identifying EV candidates with telematics and other tools and planning for the long term; and
    • Manage a workplace charging program, including surveying your workforce and assessing fees to employees.
